Cambridge CELTA or DLC TEFL – Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Durban Language Centre offers two TEFL courses.

The Part-time TEFL course runs for 12 weeks and is suitable for those who are working or studying full-time. The Part Time TEFL course is accredited by the Durban Language Centre.

The Full time Cambridge CELTA course runs for 4 weeks and is suitable for those who are able to study full time for 1 month. Both courses are very similar, with the same methodology and teaching assessment, however, the CELTA is externally moderated by Cambridge, so you receive a certificate from the University of Cambridge English Assesments.

The Full time Cambridge CELTA course:
The full time CELTA is made up of theory and practical component.

Input sessions (interactive lectures), covering the methodology and theory of TEFL teaching are held each afternoon. The materials covered have been developed through decades of language training experience, and are structured to help the candidates evolve into TEFL teachers by preparing them for the teaching practice. This includes detailed analysis of lesson planning, class staging, material selection and development, and developing a deeper understanding of student needs.

Lesson planning is held each morning, and the candidates are provided with the material and support from trainers to helps them understand the lesson they will teach the next day. Each candidate will be teaching for approximately 10 hours, so they will have a lesson to each every second day.

Teaching practice is held daily, and candidates are able to teach, and observe their classmates teaching real students. The classes are set up as they would be in a language school, with students separated into levels according to their ability (Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, Advanced). Candidates teach two levels between elementary and upper-intermediate. Following the teaching practice, detailed feedback is provided by the trainers.

Four (4) assignments are submitted during the CELTA of maximum 1500 words. These are specific to the course, and support and planning assistance will be provided by the trainers.

Durban Language Centre does not provide employment placement services,  however, sessions on the course cover the nature of working internationally, how to prepare your cv, and how to process your applications with agencies, and government programmes such as the Japanese JET or The Korean EPIK which are Asian government programmes to facilitate English development.
